Detailed overview of all functions in the Bäume in Wien app.


Interactive Map

The map is the central element of the app. It visualizes all 230,620 trees recorded in the tree cadastre.

  • Clustering: At low zoom levels, trees are grouped to maintain performance.
  • 3D Buildings: 3D building models can be activated for better orientation.
  • Location: Displays your current position (GPS required).
  • Offline Maps: Map data is stored locally to save data usage.

Tree Data

Tap a tree to access all available data:

  • Species: Scientific name and common name.
  • Planting Year: The year the tree was planted (if recorded).
  • Dimensions: Tree height, trunk circumference, and crown diameter.
  • Location: District and address.
  • Tree ID: The unique identification number in the cadastre.

Wikipedia Integration

The app automatically loads information from Wikipedia for the respective tree species.

  • Description: Excerpts from the article.
  • Images: Photos of the tree species from Wikimedia Commons.
  • Links: Direct access to the full article.

Tree Rally

A gamified mode for discovering tree species.

  • Solo Mode: Collect different tree species in your area and earn achievements.
  • School Mode: Allows teachers to create rallies for school classes using a code.
  • Statistics: Overview of collected species and progress.

Community Trees

Not every tree is recorded in the official Vienna tree registry – but you can help change that!

Report Trees

  • Location: Provide the exact location via GPS or map selection.
  • Species: Enter the tree species to the best of your knowledge.
  • Visible: Reported trees are immediately visible to all users.

Confirm & Flag

  • Confirm: Logged-in users can confirm the existence of reported trees.
  • Flag: Incorrect entries, spam, or trees that no longer exist can be flagged for review.

Verification

  • Trees with sufficient confirmations receive "Verified" status.
  • The official "Bäume in Wien" team is identified by a verification badge.

Account Required

Reporting and confirming community trees requires a free account. Register via email or through Google/GitHub.


AR Mode (Beta)

Augmented Reality function for identifying trees.

  • Live View: Displays tree information as an overlay on the camera image.
  • Distance: Shows distance and direction to nearby trees.

Statistics

Comprehensive statistical analysis of the tree population.

  • Top 10: The most common tree species in Vienna.
  • District Comparison: Distribution of trees across the 23 districts.

Favorites & Notes

Manage your personal tree collection.

  • Save: Mark important trees as favorites.
  • Notes: Add private text notes to trees.
  • Photos: Save your own photos directly with the tree (locally).

Offline Availability

The tree database is fully available offline. An internet connection is only required for map updates, Wikipedia images, and Wikipedia texts.


Privacy

The app respects your privacy.

  • No Tracking: No usage data is sent to third parties.
  • Local: User data (favorites, notes) is primarily stored locally.
  • Open Source: The app's source code is available for review.
