User Guide

This guide explains the basic functions of the Bäume in Wien app.

Getting Started

1. Installation and Launch

After downloading from the App Store or Play Store, you can start the app immediately. No registration is required.

2. Permissions

On first launch, the app asks for location access.

  • This is necessary to show your position on the map and find trees nearby.
  • You can use the app without location access, but you will have to navigate the map manually.

3. Map Controls

  • Pan: Drag with one finger to move the map.
  • Zoom: Use two fingers to zoom in or out.
  • Center: Tap the crosshair icon in the bottom right to jump to your position.

Search and Find

Use the search bar at the top of the screen:

  • Address search: Search for street names in Vienna.
  • Tree search: Search for tree species (common or scientific names).

Tap a search result to move the map to that location.

Viewing Tree Details

Tap a blue dot on the map to open the detail view. A bottom sheet appears with:

  • Name and species of the tree
  • Planting year, height, and trunk circumference
  • Address

Swipe up to access additional tabs:

  • Wiki: Wikipedia article and images.
  • Notes: Your personal notes.
  • Photos: Add your own images.

Tree Rally

The Rally mode allows for the systematic collection of tree species.

  1. Open the Rally tab.
  2. Select Solo Explorer.
  3. Tap on trees near you (radius approx. 20m) to "collect" them.
  4. New tree species are added to your progress.

AR Mode (Beta)

Augmented Reality mode overlays tree information on the camera view.

  1. Open the AR tab.
  2. Tap Start.
  3. Point your camera at the surroundings.
  4. Markers show the position and names of trees.

Note: This feature requires an ARCore-compatible smartphone.
